“IT WILL be all right.” Dr. Diaz did not touch Wolf, but she looked as if she were considering it. How strange that she seemed desirous of offering it comfort.

“Torvik is distressed. You should provide him reassurance instead. I will endure.” Wolf studied her and then showed her the footage. As the scene played back, Wolf watched her expressions change. Judging by the way she covered her mouth with her hand and moisture coated her eyes, she clearly loved Torvik’s mother.

When playback ended, she cleared her throat and stood, then summoned a hoverstretcher. “You will help me transport Althea into the compound.”

Wolf rose as well and followed, carefully avoiding Torvik’s reddened eyes. Torvik did not like intrusions into his emotional privacy. As a blue-haired woman arrived with the hoverstretcher, strange déjà vu overtook Wolf. For a moment, Wolf was once more in the cellar, trying to choose which treasures to rescue and load onto the hoverpallets. Now it followed Dr. Diaz’s instructions to lift Althea evenly.

She made approving noises and murmured, “Just like that. Good,” as Wolf balanced her torso and legs while supporting her head. Simple for its long arms, but more difficult for the humans. It settled her onto the stretcher without jostling her and felt a rush of pride.

It looked instinctively to Torvik to find him watching with a conflicted expression. Wolf did not know how to make that better, but as the blue-haired woman and Dr. Diaz eased the stretcher out of the cruiser, Wolf bit its lip and held out its arms to Torvik. Torvik stared at it for a few moments and then stepped into its embrace. Relief flooded Wolf as Torvik’s smaller body nestled in against its larger frame. It kissed Torvik’s auburn hair and smiled into the waves.

“It will be all right,” it murmured, repeating Dr. Diaz’s words, giving them to the right person.

Torvik choked on his emotions, his back heaving under Wolf’s hands, and Wolf stroked his spine in soothing loops as they used to do for each other at the workshop. Torvik relaxed as his arms tightened behind Wolf’s back. That felt good. Wolf smiled wider.

Then Dr. Diaz yelled for Wolf to come with her, and it disengaged gently from Torvik, kissing his temple as it pulled away.

“I will hold you more afterward. The doctor requires assistance.” It looked into Torvik’s beautiful eyes. They seemed even more blue surrounded by the wet redness of his suppressed tears. Smiling was probably inappropriate, but Wolf couldn’t stop itself.

Torvik gave it a watery smile in return. “Go help Dr. Diaz. I’ll be fine.”

Wolf nodded. “Affirmative. You will be fine. I will find you soon.”

Torvik made a shooing gesture, and Wolf chased after Dr. Diaz. Halfway to the main building, it paused long enough to glance back at where Torvik stood in the open hatchway, scowling after them. It raised a hand to wave at him, waiting just long enough for Torvik to wave back, and then followed Dr. Diaz inside.

The building was not as grand as most dwellings Wolf had inhabited, but it was much fancier than Torvik’s workshop.
